As part of its commitment to procure renewable energy, Verizon has signed four new long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with up to 410 megawatts of renewable energy capacity. The telecom company aims to purchase or produce renewable energy equivalent to 50% of its total annual electricity consumption by 2025. As a result of these new agreements, the company's total planned renewable energy capacity across 24 REPAs has exceeded 3GW. Recent contracts include two REPAs with Invenergy, which could bring total renewable energy capacity to 240MW. The projects include a facility in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) regional market and a facility in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) regional market, both of which will begin operations in 2022. “We are proud to be one of the leaders in purchasing renewable energy in the United States,” said Matt Ellis, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Verizon.
“We are also a leader in green financing, having issued four green bonds over the years with a total value of $4 billion, enabling us to further support and invest in renewable energy to achieve our goal of net zero operational emissions (Scope 1 and 2 )) by 2035."
